The One Thousand and One Nights are a diverse, socially and textually stratified corpus, making it fruitful to look for otherwise marginalized voices and perspectives within it.
Through their meandering across social strata, cultural contexts, and media of transmission, the Nights themselves shift shape and role, not unlike many characters living the adventures the collection narrates.
The seminar will focus on the varying readings of some of the female characters: the sisters in the frame-story, Maryam the Girdle-Maker, and Zumurrud, whose vicissitudes thematically mirror or contrast each other in the variants of the collection, arguably reflecting different social ideals.
Speaker: Marco Lauri (University of Urbino and University of Macerata)
