Historic Area of the Department of Human Sciences for Education at the University of Milano-Bicocca carries out—or has carried out—research activities within the following scientific-disciplinary field:
This scientific-disciplinary group includes only one scientific-disciplinary field (SSD) of the same name: Medieval History (HIST-01/A).
The ongoing or completed research activity in the History Area includes the following SSD, which falls under GSD 11/HIST-01:
- Medieval History (HIST-01/A)
formerly M-STO/01 Medieval History
Research in this field spans the broad chronological arc from Late Antiquity (from the fifth century) to the fifteenth century. It overlaps in content and methods with the history of antiquity and the modern age. The field is characterised by interdisciplinarity and a wide range of methodological approaches that consider the distinctive features of European civilisation. It also explores Western Europe’s interactions with the Byzantine, Slavic, and Islamic worlds, and examines the various systems of relations with other cultures.
Research includes the historical study of political-institutional, economic-social, religious, cultural, military, environmental, and gender dynamics during the medieval period. It also encompasses studies on historiography, methodology, sources, and the didactics of medieval history, with attention to medievalism, memory, the public dimension of historical knowledge and its communication, and the implications of new digital technologies for the discipline.
This scientific-disciplinary group includes only one scientific-disciplinary field (SSD) of the same name: Modern History (HIST-02/A).
The ongoing or completed research activity in the History Area includes the following SSD, which falls under GSD 11/HIST-02
- Modern History (HIST-02/A)
formerly M-STO/02 Modern History
Scientific and educational activity in this field focuses on the historical period from the end of the medieval world to the age of revolutions, the rise of industrial society, and the formation of nation-states. It addresses the era marked by global explorations, the invention and spread of the printing press, the emergence of Humanism, the scientific method, and the Enlightenment. The field also examines religious and political conflicts, the development of tolerance, new political and institutional systems, the rise and consolidation of empires in Europe and beyond, the formulation of the rights of man and the citizen, the drafting of early constitutions, and the growth of national movements.Research also covers Eastern Europe, with attention to the specific historical trajectories of Byzantine, Slavic, and Ottoman cultures. The field engages in interdisciplinary research across areas such as political-institutional, economic-social, gender, religious, cultural, maritime, military, urban, rural, and environmental history. It includes studies on methodology, historiography, and history education, with reference to the public dimension of historical knowledge and its dissemination, as well as the digital processing of historical data.
This scientific-disciplinary group encompasses scholarly and educational activities in all fields related to the history of the period from the late 18th century to the present. It includes a specific focus on the history of Eastern Europe, covering Eastern and Danubian-Balkan Europe, and—via Russia—parts of Asia, with careful consideration of their unique historical characteristics.
The ongoing or completed research activity in the History Area includes the following SSD, which falls under GSD 11/HIST-03:
- Contemporary History (HIST-03/A)
formerly M-STO/04 Contemporary History
Research and teaching activities in this field address the political, economic, social, and cultural transformations and revolutions from the late eighteenth century to the present day. The field draws on a wide and diverse range of sources to analyse human activity and its implications at local, national, international, and global levels. When appropriate, research employs transnational, comparative, and global approaches to identify connections across contexts and scales. This field applies the critical historical method to formulate contextually relevant categories and concepts. It promotes interdisciplinary approaches, dialogue across fields, and openness to scientific, thematic, and methodological innovation. Research also includes historiography and methodology, with particular attention to memory studies, the public role of historical knowledge and its communication, and the influence of digital technologies on the discipline. Finally, it advances disciplinary competences and contributes to the didactics of history.
