Description
formerly L-ART/06 Cinema, Photography, and Television
This field encompasses the study of visual, sound, and audiovisual media. In addition to its traditional focus on film and television, it examines photography, radio and sound media, emerging visual technologies, and interactive digital media. Engaging in dialogue with other disciplines, this field employs a wide range of methodological approaches, including theoretical (aesthetics, semiotics, visual studies), historical and archaeological, socio-anthropological, psychological and neuro-cognitive, economic, technical, production-oriented, and pedagogical perspectives.
Research also addresses the production, distribution, promotion, consumption, preservation, restoration, exhibition, and archiving of both media products and devices. The field explores the artistic and aesthetic uses of media and new media (e.g., video art and media art), and analyses genres, styles, movements, and authors. It also covers the history and methodology of criticism.
This sector is attentive to issues of gender, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. In addition to collaborating with other SSDs, it maintains connections with creative and cultural industries as well as public and private institutions operating in the field.
