Artistic Area
The Artistic Area of the Department of Human Sciences for Education at the University of Milano-Bicocca carries out—or has carried out—research activities within the following scientific-disciplinary field:
This scientific-disciplinary group encompasses research and teaching in the fields of live performance, music from both written and oral traditions, recorded music, cinema, and visual, sound, and audiovisual media, both analog and digital. These subjects are analyzed both individually and in their intermedial relationships. They are studied through historical, critical, systematic, pedagogical-didactic, and production-organizational perspectives, using a range of methodological approaches—including historical-philological, philosophical-aesthetic, theoretical-critical, semiotic-linguistic, socio-cultural, and cultural-anthropological. Research in this area may also engage in meaningful dialogue with other disciplines. The focus extends to both national and international contexts.
Ongoing or completed research in the Artistic Area includes the following scientific-disciplinary sectors (SSD), all within the broader field 10/PEMM-01:
- Film, Photography, Radio, Television, and Digital Media (PEMM-01/B)
formerly L-ART/06 Cinema, Photography, and Television
This field encompasses the study of visual, sound, and audiovisual media. In addition to its traditional focus on film and television, it examines photography, radio and sound media, emerging visual technologies, and interactive digital media. Engaging in dialogue with other disciplines, this field employs a wide range of methodological approaches, including theoretical (aesthetics, semiotics, visual studies), historical and archaeological, socio-anthropological, psychological and neuro-cognitive, economic, technical, production-oriented, and pedagogical perspectives.
Research also addresses the production, distribution, promotion, consumption, preservation, restoration, exhibition, and archiving of both media products and devices. The field explores the artistic and aesthetic uses of media and new media (e.g., video art and media art), and analyses genres, styles, movements, and authors. It also covers the history and methodology of criticism.
This sector is attentive to issues of gender, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. In addition to collaborating with other SSDs, it maintains connections with creative and cultural industries as well as public and private institutions operating in the field. - Musicology and Music History (PEMM-01/C)
formerly L-ART/07 Musicology and Music History
This sector focuses on music as an art form, a science, and a mode of cultural expression, communication, and entertainment across various genres from antiquity to the present day. It addresses musical phenomena through multiple disciplinary lenses: historical, theoretical, philosophical-aesthetic, pedagogical-didactic, philological-paleographical, economic-productive, sociological, and psychological.
The field also engages with the preservation and promotion of musical heritage, examines the role of music in media, and explores the relationships between music and other arts. In addition, it investigates the production, transmission, and reception of music through emerging technologies, including digital platforms.
