Decolonizing paradigms in 'Women, Gender and Islam' studies

Queer, feminist theology, new futures

18 novembre dalle 14.30 alle 17.30
Aula U7-3, Piazza dell'Ateneo Nuovo, 1
20126, Milano Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca

The lecture tries to frame some new concepts and dynamics which are useful for understanding the social and intellectual complexity in contemporary Muslim majority countries and specifically in the Middle East and North Africa. By overturning the colonial paradigm centered on the victimization of the "Arab-Muslim woman with hijab", alternative perspectives will be offered in order to articulate a paradigm centered on the transformative agency of women - and gender minorities - in these specific contexts. These tools draw on the dynamics in place in the MENA region on the level of social movements for the recognition of gender identities and rights and on the intellectual movements for the reform of Contemporary Islamic Thought.
